saosin // dallas & austin

Seven Years. Pretty rad coincidence that one of, if not the, most popular songs written by Saosin when Anthony was still singing in the band is also the number of years it had been since I had seen them perform (with Cove singing, of course). When I saw these dates coming through Texas, I was pumped. After seeing the dates on the coasts previously and wanting so badly to be able to make the trip out to see them but not being able to, and then getting to see them just a couple of miles from my house with a last minute confirmation. It  was pretty rad. The set list was everything you'd expect it to be; Translating the Name EP, all of it, including Seven Years as an encore, plus Mookie's Last Christmas and a few rad new songs the band was giving a go made for an awesome hour of music, taking me back to late high-school and early college years when all that mattered was going to shows, singing along, losing our voices, and dreaming of what the future holds. Music is pretty cool like that - transporting you back seven, eight, nine, ten years in a heart beat, feeling like you did the first time you heard these songs.

It gets cooler when, after the show and posting up a photograph on Instagram, you see a message from a friend who happens to be in town in the next city (Austin) saying you should come down and shoot the show again. So Jordan and I loaded up in the Mazda with a few more rolls of film and trekked down I-35 to catch Saosin once more, this time at Emo's. The set list was practically the same but I didn't care. I'd been waiting years to see these songs performed that I was more than happy to see and shoot the set again. It was another awesome night, wrapped up with a slice of pizza from Homeslice with Jordan and John (who had suggested we come down) and a long return trek home up 35 in the middle of the night. A long day, to say the least, but these are the things we do for music, and these sort of experiences. I wouldn't give that weekend back for the world.

Enjoy the photos, let me know what you think, how music has effected you, you know, cool shit.

And, if anyone is curious what these photos were photographed with/on: a Pentax 67 with a 105mm f/2.4 lens, a 5D with a 50 mm lens, and a Leica M4-P with a 35 mm lens. Films were Ilford 3200, Tri-X, and Portra 400.

vans warped tour 2012 // dallas, tx

Another year, another Vans Warped Tour has come and passed through Dallas, Texas (and for as long as I've been going, always the same venue, just a different name, Superpages.com center, Gexa Energy Pavillion, Smirnoff, the list goes on). And of all the years, this is probably the most pumped I've been on a lineup. Ever. More than my first in high-school, more than the first time I got to photograph the tour's date in Dallas. Seriously. I don't think I can explain how ridiculously awesome it is to walk around for close to ten hours photographing bands you've been listening to for years at a festival you've been going to for seven or eight years. So much damn fun. Even if I did get a bit sunburned (but I swear, I did use sunscreen, and reapplied, I'm perfectly satisfied with my current number of freckles ando not need a single one more). So in between filling up my rad podium chill with ice cold water, I photographed The Ghost Inside (Epitaph Records), Matty Arsenault of A Loss for Words (Rise Records), Yellowcard (Hopeless Records), Every Time I Die (Epitaph), Four Year Strong (Universal Motown), New Found Glory (Epitaph), Polar Bear Club (Bridge 9), For Today (Razor & Tie), and Taking Back Sunday (Warner Bros. Records).

The energy of Warped was just as intense as I remember it my first year and it definitely felt like the bands were doing more and more to get vocalists (at the least) up on the barricades and get everyone pumped even more. I wish that would have happened more when I was going in high school. Regardless, everyone on this tour killed it (at least that I saw). From New Found Glory's run through their discography including My Friends Over You, Hit or Miss, and Intro (a personal favorite), to The Ghost Inside's phenomenal set of blasting melodic hardcore, or Every Time I Die's intense riffs, it was certainly a year to not miss this tour. There were also some awesome bands like Step Dad, I am the Avalanche, and Memphis May Fire that I was unfortunately not able to make the first three songs of the sets to photograph them.

All together, a pretty f*cking awesome way to kick off summer, if I say so myself. And as always, going to try to catch Warped when it comes through town again next year.

parkway drive, the warriors, and set your goals // house of blues // dallas

I shot this show a while back and figured I'd post up some images. The Warriors opened up and it was freaking rad. So glad I finally got to see that band after listening to them since high school, and the The Ghost Inside went on (which I blogged that awesomeness a while back), then Set Your Goals, and then the headliner—Parkway Drive. These dudes kill it every time I see them, easily. They always bring tons of energy, regardless of where they're playing. The last photo here is absolutely not representative of that, but it carries an interesting weight to it that I couldn't ignore or keep myself from posting. year of the party crashers // vans warped tour 2010 // dallas tx

This past July, I got the chance to cover the Vans Warped Tour at its stop in Dallas, Texas. Needless to say, I, again, was beyond stoked. This time, I was also quite a bit more prepared; carrying two camera bodies, several batteries, lenses, and a rain cover, all of which I considered myself quite fortunate to have at several points in the day. It was also my first time out with my new 5D mk II, and needless to say, I was incredibly impressed with its performance. The festival was awesome, per usual. You really can't beat starting your day with Every Time I Die, Motion City Soundtrack, and Alkaline Trio, and finishing with shooting Parkway Drive after a gnarly storm tore through Dallas.

artist vs poet // band promos // dallas tx

I met up with the guys in Artist vs. Poet a while back to take some photos for the release of their new album, Favorite Fix. The shoot was ridiculously cold, so big props to the AVP guys for sticking it out and shooting all day. It was a lot of fun roaming around downtown Dallas working on getting that perfect shot; I only wish it had been warmer. A lot warmer.
